Schools.

Hello and welcome to the Schools Page.

As you can see from the web site I am a Freelance Artist specialising in mural projects. However I also deliver a wide range of arts based activities that explore the creative process through a variety of media. I am always interested to hear from schools that would like some sort of artistic input.

I graduated in Fine Art at Sheffield Hallam University in 1990 and over the last 10 years I have pursued a career as a painter and printmaker. I have had an ongoing interest in the role that art and design plays in the National Curriculum and I am passionate about how it can contribute to a child’s development and education.

Over the last 5 years I have worked extensively in schools and colleges where I have devised many arts based workshops aimed at extending a child’s experience of art in an innovative and exciting way. The schemes of work I deliver are tailored to meet any of the Units in the Art and Design Curriculum ( Key Stage 1 + 2 + 3 ) and I liase closely with staff from planning to delivery. Each workshop is specific to the age range and ability of the class. I have worked in all educational settings including Special Needs and I am very flexible in my approach.

Amongst many of the activities I offer I have a particular interest in printmaking. I deliver a number of 1 and 2 day workshops which explore various techniques. These include collographs, dry point etching, mono printing and lino cuts. I bring with me a portable etching press so any kind of printmaking can be fully explored. All the processes are water based and non – toxic.

As you will see from the web site I have undertaken many mural commissions in both the private and public sectors. Many of these projects have been with schools and colleges nationwide. I try to make each project as inclusive as possible. This ranges from the planning and design stage right through to the painting of the artwork. I usually organise workshops to generate ideas and themes from which the final design is based. In some cases I replicate children’s designs exactly so that they have a real sense of ownership given their commitment and contribution to it. If the mural is to be sited outside I use exterior gloss paints which ensures durability. Unfortunately this precludes children from the actual painting. In such cases I involve the parents and staff.

So if you have an arts week coming up, school performances on the horizon or some sort of project in mind then please get in contact. I work nationwide and I’d be only too happy to visit and bring my portfolio.

Many thanks for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.
